An Oregon man died Monday night after his Porche was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 44 just east of Joplin.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report states that at 6:25 p.m. 46-year-old Jorge M. Couto, of Tulatin, Ore., began to slow and pull his car onto the shoulder of the interstate. It was overtaken by a 2006 Freightliner driven by 48-year-old Charlie L. Feals, of St. Louis.

The Porche then traveled into the median and overturned.

Jasper County Coroner Jerry Neil pronounced Couto dead at 6:33 pm. Feals was not injured in the crash.

Cuoto’s death brings Missouri’s total traffic fatalities to 114 for the year. At the same point last year, 129 people had died on state highways.
