An as-yet unidentified man died Thursday after losing control of his vehicle during a high-speed police chase.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol joined the pursuit on southbound U.S. Highway 71 near the Passaic exit around 3:15 p.m. According to information released by the Highway Patrol, the Archie Police Department and Bates County Sheriff’s Department were chasing a full size Dodge van.

MSHP troopers deployed spike strips which were struck by both the van and the Archie police cruiser. With the cruiser out of the chase, the Bates County deputy and MSHP troopers continued following the van.

When the chase crossed into Vernon County, the troopers took over. They followed the van until the driver attempted to exit U.S. 71 near Horton.

Out of control, the van left the roadway, vaulted two ditches, and struck an embankment. Vernon County Coroner David Ferry pronounced the driver, a 46-year-old male, dead at the scene.

The driver’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Information as to why the van was being pursued was not immediately available.
