Something new at the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre

(Published Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006)

Under the stewardship of Artistic Director Quin Gresham, the historic Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre is moving into new territory.

Gresham, preparing for his second second season at the helm, said while the theater’s commitment to providing quality productions remains unchanged, the Lyceum will be offering an entirely new line up of plays and musicals.

Gresham said in years past, the management of the Lyceum Theatre tended to pack a season’s lineup with “fan favorites.” Unfortunately, repeating productions too closely together led to fan fatigue, he said. Even the hilarious “Greater Tuna” was a tough sell last season.

“People have to come a long way to see a show,” Gresham said. “They want to see something that’s new.”

In 2006, that’s exactly what they’ll get. Dubbed “A Season of Premiers,” this year’s lineup features productions that have never been staged in Arrow Rock.

This season, the Lyceum Theatre will present:

“Kiss Me Kate”

“1776”

“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”

“Harvey”

“Oscar and Felix: A New Look at the Odd Couple”

“Dial M for Murder”

“Tuesdays with Morrie” and

“Dracula”

Gresham also said its not too late for actors to join the casts of these productions. The Lyceum will need men and women ages 15 and up to fill a wide variety of parts.

The first Midwest auditions will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 4 at the First Baptist Church in Columbia, Mo. The church is located at 1112 E. Broadway.

Auditions will also be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on March 5 at the Old School House in Arrow Rock.

Actors are asked to prepare a brief monologue and 16 bars of two contrasting songs. They should also bring a photo and resume. Gresham said new actors need not worry if they do not have many previous acting credits, however.

“We all have to start somewhere,” he said.
